Alan Gillis is a retired Professor of Engineering and former Program Chair of the Marine Engineering Program at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.  He currently consults on methods to study for the USCG Marine Engineering Exams and continues to teach courses in Marine Engineering at various institutions.

Professor Gillis earned a BS in Marine Engineering from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  He currently holds USCG Merchant Marine Licenses as a Chief Engineer of Steam Vessels; First Assistant Engineer of Steam Vessels of Any Horsepower, and Third Assistant Engineer of Motor or Gas Turbine Vessels of Any Horsepower.

In 2007 I started to provide specific trainning on the USCG Engineering Illlustrations for my students at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.  Since that time, I have continuously updated my materials to assist students and mariners with training aids for the USCG Merchant Marine Engineering Exams.

In 2012, the USCG made some major changes in the Electrical section of the Engineering exam. In addition, the USCG stopped providing the illustrations as a study aid.  In response to this, I developed ELECTRICAL - the Unofficial Study Guide for the New USCG Marine Engineering Electrical Exam.  Now in its 4th Edition, ELECTRICAL has become the go-to study guide for the USCG Electrical Exam.

2023 ushers in the new editions of the Illustrations workbooks, completely revised and includes all of the latest USCG Marine Engineering Illustrations

The mission is singular:  Provide the best training materials to the best Merchant Mariners in the world.
